Lenormand cards are based on an 18th century cartomancy parlor game devised by Johann Kaspar Hechtel in Nürnberg, Germany, called Spiel Der Hoffnung, or Game of Hope.
Marie-Anne Lenormand, a renowned French fortune teller of the 19th century used Hechtel’s cards as a divination tool, reading for famous people of her time. After she died, a deck was found amongst her possessions and ever since the cards have carried her name.
I first fell in love with Lenormand’s cards after seeing online Neil Lovell’s Chelsea Lenormand deck.
I searched for a set but it was very difficult to find. They are out of production and sadly, Mr. Lovell passed away in 2018.
My designs are linoleum cut and handprinted on Hahnemühle sketch paper using Tsukineko inks with a hand press made by Gerasimov.
